Just announced now that Francis Lawrence will be directing the follow up to The Hunger Games, Catching Fire.
I feel you. Well, the thing is you know his work. Ever seen Janet Jackson’s Son Of A Gun? Britney’s I’m A Slave 4 U? J.Lo’s Waiting For Tonight? I’m sure you have, well, that’s his work! And he also directed I Am Legend, Constantine and last year’s Water For Elephants. Those films don’t have the a connecting theme except for the fact that they all hover, or are around, the 50% mark on Rotten Tomatoes.
I’m being a little hard on him… sure. And in all honesty, Gary Ross was a random ass choice for The Hunger Games but he pulled it off, so, who knows? Those music videos I mentioned are good, but his film work isn’t really the strongest reason for him to direct such a follow up. But do we expect anything less from Summit? Long story short, Summit, the people responsible for the insipid Twilight films merged with Lionsgate Films before they went bankrupt and before The Hungers Games became the monster it is. In short, they rush. Every Twilight film has had a good director but every film has been awful because of the source material and the fact that Summit, unlike Warner Brothers (Harry Potter) or New Line (Lord of the Rings) doesn’t care about taking their time. So, this might be why this choice is so abrupt and sudden.
Will he do a good job? Well, I Am Legend was visually arresting and the tone of that is somewhat similar to that of Catching Fire, and The Hunger Games in general, so he’s fine there but I don’t know. Personally, I was really rooting for Cronenberg.
